The vision for the public realm is informed by porosity, movement, and connectivity. The material palette for the public realm is inspired by the juxtaposition between the raw industrial legacy of the Dupont Street corridor and the open green space of the Wallace Emerson Park. Rugged, hard-working materials such as basalt, concrete, and corten steel are employed along northern edge of the site, at Dupont Street. Moving south toward Wallace Emerson Park, the material palette gradually shifts to incorporate softer and more natural materials like brick and timber. The blending of rugged and refined materials gives the public realm a unique quality that is rooted in the industrial history of the site.
Dupont Street was once one of Toronto’s busiest manufacturing hubs. To pay homage to its industrial past, the design for Dupont Street will reinvigorate and reinforce its role as a ‘hard-working’ street. Each of the new internal streets are designed to lead residents and visitors to Points Plaza, a new signature public gathering space that will celebrate and reinforce the site’s longstanding role as a community node for the Wallace Emerson community. The Mews will celebrate the site as a retail focal point by offering an enhanced pedestrian-only shopping street. The public laneways that surround the Reimagine Galleria site will not only provide important pedestrian connections, but also serve as important public amenities to support the laneway culture of the surrounding community. The creation of The Diagonal – a safe and clear route between Dupont Street and Dufferin Street, and a continuous and animated public frontage for Wallace Emerson Park.
