‘The Median Garden Arch’ is a vertical landscape installation that exploits the most characteristic quality and feature of the Kingsway neighbourhood: the centre median of Bloor Street West. The project gives renewed vitality to this unique street configuration by creating a signature feature that changes with the seasons and serves multiple roles and functions for the BIA and community. It highlights the median as more than a 2-Dimensional greenspace, by using a simple and repeatable flatbar steel module which guides the growth of climbing vines and flowering plants in an area too constrained to support the growth of a natural tree canopy. This vertical extension of the existing median gardens transforms the median itself into a green/floral monument.
The Kingsway Garden Arch builds upon the existing heritage language in the area, expressed in both the architecture and the public realm. It offers a visual delight that is complementary to this traditional streetscape and supports a quality retail environment on Bloor Street West as distinct within the city. Spatially, it frames views and engages physical and visual connections for pedestrians across the street, offering diverse perspectives and enriching the streetscape experience. Strategically, the structure is modular, scalable, and able to be fabricated off-site and installed quickly or in phases. And symbolically, it provides an organic, living landmark able to express the local pride in their lush, green, and vital community.
